Vallalar Palluyir Kappagangal (VPK) Scheme

The Hon'ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu has initiated a new scheme called “Vallalar Palluyir Kaapagangal” to permanently reduce the suffering of abandoned and stray animals. This scheme is being implemented to commemorate the 200th birth anniversary of Saint Vallalar. It aims to support Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and Animal Welfare Organizations (AWOs) in caring for abandoned and injured domesticated livestock, pet animals, and stray animals.

Highlights of the Scheme:
  • Feeding and Medical Treatment for abandoned, sheltered, injured, stray and pet animals
  • Providing Ambulance to safeguard animals in distress
  • Providing Financial Assistance to SPCA/AWO/NGOs that requires new or additional infrastructure including construction of shelters in the name of “Vallalar Palluyir Kaapagangal”
  • Animal Birth Control and Immunization Program for the stray and pet dogs/cats
Benefits of the Scheme:
  • To help NGOs support them to continue their care giving towards sick, injured, homeless and abandoned animals by aiding for food, Medicals, Infrastructure and ABC to help them with burdens.
  • To encourage NGOs to do more good work related to housing rescuing animals.
  • To educate NGOs in the future to focus on rescue rehab neuter release policy as with the large number of animals in Tamil Nadu if most animals are housed them and NGOs will also get full quickly and this will deprive space for truly deserving paraplegic and sick animals that need immediate help.
  • To also ensure that all NGOs or any house that shelters animals respects the five freedoms of the Animals and has the animals best interests in mind and treat the Animals with utmost sensitivity, care and concern without violating any of the animals rights.
